Subject        : Beware of fraudulent tax refund scams

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Revenue Department urges the public to be wary of certain dishonest people who are currently making fraudulent personal income tax refund claims. These people would contact companies’ employees whose income do not reach taxable threshold and ask for personal information such as names, house registration, personal identification number and bank account number. They claimed that they would make tax refund requests on behalf of these clients. In doing so, they made up egregious withholding tax amount in order to request fictitious tax refund via internet tax filing. Upon receiving the tax refund they would pay a fee of 500 baht to each client.

The RD has been able to monitor tax refund requests for potential problems though the utilisation of the computer system. The Revenue Department will take immediate legal action against every wrongdoer or collaborator. We have filed charges with the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and arrest those involved. They face litigation for collaborating or attempting to embezzle government revenues under Sections 341 80 and 81 of the Civil and Commercial Code and face imprisonment up to 3 years and fine not exceeding 6,000 baht or both.

Mr. Satit Rungkasiri, Deputy Director-General and spokesperson of the Revenue Department said “These fraudulent tax refund claims are illegal. We urge the public to avoid any of these tax refund scams. Please report any suspicious activity to PO Box 345 Samsen Nai, Bangkok 10400 or call RD call Centre at 0 2272 8000. You can be assured that we will take immediate action against these wrongdoers.”
